Position Title: Corridor Stewardship Technician

Position Purpose:  

Under the supervision of the Mid-Atlantic Corridor Stewardship Coordinator, the Corridor Stewardship Technician monitors, maintains, and recovers exterior corridor boundaries of lands that were acquired to protect the Appalachian Trail, while mitigating encroachments encountered according to National Park Service protocol. Fieldwork is the primary function of this position. The Technician works with Trail Clubs in the mid-Atlantic region to preserve and strengthen the existing volunteer-centered system. The Technician keeps detailed work records and maintains field equipment. Fieldwork may occur from northern Virginia to southern New York.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Assists local volunteer Trail club members in repainting Appalachian Trail corridor boundary lines; monitors monument and boundary line conditions; and clears line-of-sight along NPS boundary lines.
  • Assists Corridor Stewardship Coordinator and Trail club leaders with organizing and presenting corridor monitoring/maintenance training workshops.
  • Prepares for field work by reviewing detailed survey maps and trail maps.
  • Documents and follows established protocol for minor and major encroachments.
  • Maintains detailed and accurate administrative information and field work records.
  • Schedules and completes field projects; including logistics coordination, pre-field preparation, and post-field follow-up.
  • Travels to and from work sites; keeps detailed work log; tent camps when necessary at work sites.
  • Organizes, inventories, and maintains tools, supplies, and other field equipment.

Qualifications:


  • High school education or equivalent required.  Bachelor’s degree in conservation, resource management, biology, forestry, or related field preferred.
  • 1-2 years related experience.
  • Excellent field skills.  Must work on remote A.T. sections and off Trail in all weather conditions.  
  • Ability to organize, track, and report on multiple projects and frequently changing priorities.
  • Strong organization, administration, and communication skills.
  • Experience and passion for working outdoors and with volunteers.
  • Proficiency with map-and-compass and GPS navigation.
  • Fluency in computer operations, Microsoft Office, and E-mail software.
  • Experience with GIS/Google Earth applications a plus.

Physical Requirements:


  • Extensive travel and weekend work may be required.  Reliable personal vehicle preferred (reimbursable mileage).
  • Ability to communicate professionally with individuals by phone, email and in person.
  • Ability to hike long distances with a full pack over difficult terrain to remote locations, and bushwhack in all weather.


Work Conditions:


  • Rigorous outdoor work environment in the outskirts of land near the Appalachian Trail.
  • Moderate noise level when in office environment, with a high level of activity on the phone, computers, and printers.
