Spring Hiking Season Celebration

On Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC)’s Visitor Center will celebrate the spring hiking season. May marks the arrival of northbound thru-hikers from Georgia and an upswing in day-hikers and overnight hikers out to enjoy the milder temperatures. Festivities will feature an official unveiling of new visitor center exhibits and displays, kids’ and Leave No Trace activities and stories from recent thru-hikers. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.

SPECIAL EVENTS:

  • 9:30 a.m. – A.T. Hike to the Virginia/West Virginia border on Loudoun Heights, led by Potomac A.T. Club volunteers (9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 5 miles, strenuous)
  • 10:00 a.m. – Unveiling of New Exhibits
  • 11:00 a.m. – “Nitpacking Gear Inspection” – submit your overweight pack to be critiqued by experienced hikers with the goal of safely reducing your pack weight
  • 1:00 – A.T. Short Film, The Green Tunnel, presented by director Kevin Gallagher, followed by thru-hiker Q&A and stories
  • 2:30 – Bear Bag Throwing Challenge
  • 4:00 – A.T. Short Film, The Green Tunnel, presented by director Kevin Gallagher

ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT THE DAY:

  • New exhibits showcasing the Appalachian Trail (A.T.)
  • A “Leave No Trace” treasure hunt
  • Special appearance from “Crumbsnatcher” the Mouse 
  • Backpacker gear displays
  • 1-day only, ATC membership special
  • Temporary tattoos
