In the coming years, the Advisory Committee hopes that our slogan will carry over into all changes being considered for the Borough, including improved river access, and beautification of the town. The Committee plans to support and implement projects and programming that enhance tourism opportunities for Duncannon as an outdoor recreation destination and encourage all to get outside, enjoy nature and recognize the connection between the health and abundance of the region’s natural assets and the vitality of its communities. For more information and event updates visit the DATC Web Page. Our volunteer Committee meets monthly at the Duncannon Borough Office. We support the efforts of the Trail Clubs maintaining the A.T. in the Greater Duncannon Area including MCM, SATC, CVATC, and YHC.
As part of the 2012 DATC Designation Festival a new mural is in place on the wall by the 11-15 bridge at the south end of town. DATC hopes this will be the first in a series. Donations are greatly appreciated for this and all the activities in planning for the DATC.
Duncannon’s A.T. Community Committee, comprised of local officials, Trail Angels, Trail to Every Classroom teachers, business owners, and representatives of non-profit organizations and Trail clubs has chosen the first Saturday in June as their Annual Appalachian Trail Festival date. DATC’s slogan is “Saving our Community from Nature Deficit Disorder.” The Annual Festival will include a vendor area for clubs, organizations and retail vendors, live musical entertainment, and presentations and activities relating to the outdoors. Hikes and river trips open to residents of the greater Duncannon area may also be offered by local trail clubs and outdoor organizations.
The historic river town of Duncannon, situated at the confluence of the Susquehanna and Juniata Rivers and the Kittatinny Ridge “Flyway,” is treasured by the thousands of thru-hikers, section hikers, and river enthusiasts in Perry County, PA. One of only a handful of small towns through which the Trail directly passes, Duncannon is well-known for its views from Hawk Rock as well as the locals’ friendliness, hospitality and generosity of local residents. It is also listed as one of the cherished towns in the Middle Susquehanna Greenway Tour.
The legendary Doyle Hotel on Market Street is a welcome respite to hikers and paddlers, offering good food, drink and a place to rest before continuing on their journey. Duncannon is also the home of several great restaurants and unique small businesses who welcome you to the town. Duncannon has also played host to the annual Billville Hiker Feed, with hikers flocking for three days of food and festivities each summer over the last nine years, and local Boy Scouts provide maps of local attractions and hiker services to help orient and welcome visitors to town.
