From Maine to Georgia

Featured Project: The Maine Appalachian Trail Land Trust’s High Peaks Initiative

The High Peaks region encompasses 230,000 remote and undeveloped acres in Maine’s western mountains, and includes eight of the fourteen highest mountains in the state. This region is also a priority area for ATC. Following the campaign to acquire the ridgeline and summit of Mount Abraham and a portion of Saddleback Mountain in which ATC was a major partner, MATLT has embarked on a journey to conserve the unique ecological qualities and sense of remoteness of the High Peaks Region. Currently, MATLT is focusing its efforts on 85,000 acres of priority lands, representing important economical and ecological resources with opportunities for forestry, recreation, and natural resource-based tourism. For more information, visit MATLT.

Similarly to its role as a coordinator and capacity-builder for the local Trail clubs to maintain the Trail, ATC uses its resources to leverage the expertise and capacity of local and regional land protection partners from Maine to Georgia. Our program partners are land conservation organizations whose areas of concern overlap with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s, and who recognize the value of the Appalachian Trail as a resource to be protected and a green corridor to anchor future conservation efforts.

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy contributes and supports partners’ projects that add value to the Appalachian Trail through a variety of means, including advocacy, technical support and small grants. ATC focuses its support on projects within its 32 priority areas . Also visit our Regional Planning page for partnerships focused on community-based landscape planning for long-term sustainability and conservation!
