Tips for Appalachian Trail Volunteer Managers

A.T. volunteer managers lead the more than 6,000 people who give their time each year to keep the Trail open and in good repair. Here is an overview of the tools and resources available to volunteer leaders.

Volunteer Database
The A.T. volunteer database will help A.T. volunteer managers recruit new volunteers and manage existing volunteers and members. Get an overview of database features and access online training programs.

Planning for Volunteers
A successful volunteer opportunity, one that provides a rewarding experience for volunteers, is often determined well before volunteers arrive. Plan to create a successful volunteer program.

Recruiting Volunteers
Plan a recruitment campaign, craft an effective recruitment message and determine where and how to publicize volunteer opportunities.

Working with Volunteers
Tips and guidelines for managing volunteers once they have been recruited.

Recognition
Recognize volunteers in a way that motivates them so they keep coming back. Information on A.T. recognition programs is also available.

Volunteer Protection
Download forms, safety guidelines and instructions to follow in the event that an A.T. volunteer is injured while working on the Trail.

Online Resources for Volunteer Managers
The web has many online resources for volunteer managers. Access online resources, volunteer management guides and online recruitment sites.
