The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is headquartered in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia with regional, field offices in New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and North Carolina. In addition to full-time positions, we also hire highly qualified seasonal staff to support our ridgerunner/caretaker and crew programs. Volunteer opportunities are also available as are full and part time internships. Full-time Positions 

Land Protection Associate – Mid-Atlantic Region
The ATC is happy to announce that it is seeking qualified applicants to fill the position of Land Protection Associate to be located in our Mid-Atlantic Regional office. This position reports to the Land Protection Manager and focuses on permanent protection and stewardship of Appalachian Trail Lands (ATC fee lands and easements) and Appalachian National Scenic Trail (ANST) corridor lands (NPS fee lands and easements) and their associated resources through effective implementation of a cooperative management system involving ATC, Trail-maintaining clubs, and public-agency partners.

The Land Protection Associate administers the field work activities related to ANST Exterior Corridor Boundaries and ATC-owned lands. The Land Protection Associate works directly with the Trail Clubs to “preserve and strengthen the existing volunteer-centered system”. Field work and volunteer engagement are the priority functions of this position. The Associate will conduct training workshops, supervise seasonal employees, assist and facilitate remediation of encroachments, and assist Trail Clubs to monitor, manage, and recover selected boundaries. The Associate maintains work records, monitoring and management data, field supplies, and a supply cache.  Field work may occur across the extent of the Appalachian Trail.

Land Protection Associate Job Description 

Education Specialist – Headquarters, Harpers Ferry, WV
Under the general supervision of Director of Conservation, the Education Specialist is responsible for assisting with the development and implementation of programs aimed at inspiring the next generation of A.T. volunteers, and diversifying interest in volunteering on the A.T. This position works cooperatively with A.T. maintaining clubs, agency partners, universities, and other collaborators.

The Education Specialist will develop relationships with school districts, youth service organizations and community partners to implement professional development programs (A Trail to Every Classroom), and will help identify and connect local resources  to teachers  working on A.T. related service projects. This position will serve as the primary liaison for a growing network of teachers engaged in A.T. related place-based education and service learning projects, and will develop effective communication strategies to support this network. The Education Specialist will be responsible for regularly updating information on ATC’s education webpages. In addition, the Specialist will assist with the integration of environmental monitoring and resource management projects in curriculum development.

Seasonal Boundary Maintenance Technician – Mid-Atlantic Region

Internships

South Mountain Internship – Mid-Atlantic Region

This position with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy works with the South Mountain Partnership, a partnership of public and non-profit organizations interested in sustaining the region’s valued natural and cultural assets. The Partnership focuses on conservation, agriculture, economic development, tourism, cultural resources, and the ecology of the region of South Mountain in Central Pennsylvania. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy works as a co-lead of the partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

This position will enable the South Mountain Partnership to further their communication strategies. The intern will be given creative freedom in developing a strategy for better connecting the partnership to the public with a concise message. The intern will define the communication plan further and develop outreach tools targeting the public, municipal officials, and business owners.
