Unaka Mountain relocations completed

Volunteers from TEHCC, ATC Konnarock Crew, Hard Core Crew, and student groups recently completed a series of relocations on the north side of Unaka Mountain.  These relocations begin about 1 mile north of Iron Mountain Gap and end about 0.75 mile north of the Unaka summit.  Almost 5 miles of new Trail were constructed over three years, with a net addition of about 1 mile to the length of the section between Greasy Creek Gap and the summit of Unaka Mountain.  Unlike the badly eroded old routing of the A.T. going up and down many knobs, sidehill grade is utilized through much of the relo'd portions.  In addition, extensive rockwork was required near the spruce-clad 5190' Unaka summit.  The current A.T. Guide to Tennessee-North Carolina (twelfth edition, revised 2005) and Tennessee-North Carolina Map 2 still describe the former route.
