Volunteer of the Month

ATC appreciates the efforts of all Trail volunteers! Learn more about the extraordinary people who keep the A.T. open and in good repair.

July 2009

Kim Simpson - July 2009 Volunteer of the MonthKim Simpson discovered the A.T. while “hiking the 4000 Footers” in New Hampshire’s White Mountains.  Intrigued by the vision of a long distance trail – a greenway with protected land on each side - Kim began volunteering on the A.T. with his wife Kathleen through their local club, the Green Mountain Club (GMC)

Kim started his volunteer work in the late seventies by maintaining a section of the A.T. - work he continues to this day. Kim, an environmental engineer, has also contributed his skills to the protection and management of the A.T. in his region.  He was President of GMC from 1991 – 1994, and has served on GMC’s board since 1985 (except for mandatory breaks every six years). On the board, Kim worked on Trail protection and chaired several committees, including the committee responsible for putting on the 2009 A.T. Festival and Biennial (July 17 – 24, Castleton, Vermont).

Kim has demonstrated his dedication to the A.T. in other ways; he and Kathleen are Life members of ATC and have attended every A.T. Biennial since 1983. Reviewing Kim’s contribution, ATC’s Development Director Royce Gibson says, “Kim puts his whole being into supporting the AT . . . giving his time, talents and money.”

For his part, Kim is committed to preserving the trail, and he enjoys working with a dedicated group of like-minded people. He “can’t say enough about the extraordinary commitment” of his Biennial committee and the work they have accomplished together. Thanks to Kim and the committee for their efforts!
