West Virginia Gov. Manchin to Visit Appalachian Trail

Harpers Ferry, West Virginia (June 9, 2009)- On Thursday, June 11, at 11 a.m., West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin will dedicate state-funded improvements to the Appalachian Trail in Harpers Ferry and recognize the volunteers who implemented the projects.

The ceremonies, organized by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, will take place on “The Point”—above the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, to the east of the intersection of Potomac and Shenandoah streets at “John Brown’s fort.”  (That is a change of location from a previous release.)

Also participating will be state Commerce Secretary Kelley Goes; David N. Startzell, executive director of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy; Pamela Underhill, superintendent of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail for the National Park Service; Dennis Frye, chief of interpretation for Harpers Ferry National Historical Park; Lee Sheaffer, president of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club; and Harpers Ferry Mayor Jim Addy.

In the event of rain, the ceremonies will be held under a tent off Shenandoah Street, on “The Green” near the tour-bus parking area.
