ATC and Forest Service Secure A.T. Protection
Asheville, N.C. (December 3, 2007)—The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) and the USDA Forest Service have purchased a scenic easement on 7.67 acres of land in Swain County near an Appalachian Trail landmark known as the Jump Up.
ATC Receives $30,000 Grant
Harpers Ferry, West Virginia (October 12, 2007)--The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is proud to be one of the recipients of a $30,000 grant from The Conservation Alliance, the organization of outdoor businesses whose collective contributions support grassroots environmenal organizations and their efforts to protect wild places.
New Accessibility Guidelines Proposed
October 2007—The Appalachian Trail Conservancy submitted comments to the U.S. Access Board earlier this month in response to proposed rules regarding accessibility guidelines for federally managed outdoor areas. Visit www.access-board.gov for the notice of proposed rulemaking.
ATC Announces First Appalachian Trail Museum Exhibit
Harpers Ferry, WV. – The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) and the Appalachian Trail Museum Society will partner on National Trails Day on Saturday, June 2, 2007 to dedicate an exhibit devoted to the two men most responsible for the Trail’s creation: Benton MacKaye and Myron Avery.
Support Bill for Roadless Areas
May 2007 – In January, six Congressmen began drumming up support for original co-sponsors of a bi-partisan conservation measure – the National Forest Roadless Area Conservation Act of 2007. It will codify the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule into law, and eliminate state petitions affecting the roadless rule, which made roadless areas vulnerable to local-only politics.
Powerhouse of Volunteers Needed in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Asheville, N.C. (May 4) — The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) is seeking volunteers who are comfortable backpacking in the remote wilderness, like to hike long distances and aren’t scared of a bit of good old-fashioned work to participate in its newest Trail crew, the Smokies Wilderness Elite A.T. (SWEAT) Crew. SWEAT Crew begins June 6, with six-day sessions that will focus on maintaining and rehabilitating the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) in one of America’s favorite parks.

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. -- The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) and its major federal partners have decided to enlarge several ongoing land-management programs into a long-term collaborative project to comprehensively monitor changes in the mountain and valley environments through which the famed, 2,174-mile footpath meanders.
Northeast Tennessee Trail Relocation Complete
ASHEVILLE, NC (December 11, 2006) – The Appalachian Trail (A.T.) across the Osborne farm is in Northeast Tennessee now resides again where it had been decades ago. This historic route of the A.T. offers panoramic views of Shady Valley, Tennessee, and beyond to Mt. Rogers, the highest point in Virginia. This relocation features a half-mile-long wheelchair-accessible route to those vistas from the summit of the farm for visitors of all abilities to enjoy.
ATC Helps Restore NH Waterways
Lyme, NH (May 30, 2006) – Appalachian Trail Conservancy received a national honor today thanks to a grant from one of the world’s leading environmentally conscious wine brands, Banrock Station Wines, in cooperation with The Conservation Fund, America’s top-rated environmental charity. The partnership announced grants to 10 environmental and conservation groups committed to saving wetlands and waterways across the nation.
