ATC Land Trust
Since 1982, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy Land Trust has helped federal agencies acquire land for the 1,000-foot wide Trail "corridor" called for by the National Trails System Act of 1968. Now that this corridor is largely completed, the Land Trust works to further protect the Trail experience by protecting features of the surrounding environment.
In all 14 Trail states, increasing development threatens picturesque vistas, wildlife habitat, water sources, small villages, farms, and valuable historic sites along the Trail that lie outside the corridor. More than 80 million people live within these states. Growing population means more houses, more cars, more noise, and more pollution. Already much of the land that protects the Trail experience has been lost. But there's still a chance to make a difference by systematically identifying important places that remain.
