Appalachian Trail Community: Duncannon, Pennsylvania

The historic river town of Duncannon, situated at the confluence of the Susquehanna and Juniata Rivers and the Kittatinny Ridge “Flyway,” is treasured by the thousands of thru-hikers, section hikers, and river enthusiasts in Perry County, PA. One of only a handful of small towns through which the Trail directly passes, Duncannon is well-known for its views from Hawk Rock as well as the locals’ friendliness, hospitality and generosity of local residents. It is also listed as one of the cherished towns in the Middle Susquehanna Greenway Tour.

The legendary Doyle Hotel on Market Street is a welcome respite to hikers and paddlers, offering good food, drink and a place to rest before continuing on their journey. Duncannon is also the home of several great restaurants and unique small businesses who welcome you to the town. Local Boy Scouts provide maps of local attractions and hiker services to help orient and welcome visitors to town.

The Duncannon Appalachian Trail Community Advisory Committee is quite active, and members are passionate about promoting a love of the A.T. among community members. The committee supports projects and programming that encourage all to get outside, enjoy nature, and recognize the connection between the health and abundance of the region's many natural assets. Each June, they put on the Duncannon Appalachian Trail Festival, and the Duncannon Outdoor Club offers hikes on the A.T. and other recreational opportunities for residents of the community. You can learn more about Duncannon, upcoming events, and their amazing community efforts to protect and promote the A.T. here!
