Visual Resources Inventory Intern - Three positions available

Position Summary:

Dates: June 24, 2019 to August 16, 2019

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) and the National Park Service (NPS) have jointly initiated a pilot visual resources inventory based on a new protocol for documenting visual resources developed by the NPS Air Resources Division. Interns will work with a core team of agency, ATC staff, and trained volunteers to complete the pilot inventory during the 2019 field season.

The interns will be working with ATC to support visual resource data collection and data entry for the visual resources inventory in 3-4 pilot sites in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina across 25 miles of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. If time allows, the team may also support field work in Maine. This work will require hiking to designated viewpoints and collecting data using the Enjoy the View protocols. Fieldwork trips may require multi-day backpacking and camping. Interns will work with staff to recruit and train volunteers who will join our team to collect field data.

• Weekly living allowance: $160

• Monthly housing allowance: $800

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Training & Skills Expected: Education and/or experience in art principles and photography, preferred.  Some coursework or experience in resource management, leadership, and community and volunteer engagement. Experience following protocols and managing data. Willingness to work in backcountry setting under sometimes challenging weather conditions. Ability to hike 5-10 miles a day in rugged terrain with up to 40 lbs. pack.  Cooperative spirt and willingness to participate in overnight backpacking trips.
