Position Summary:

This position helps advance volunteer and training opportunities on the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) primarily through personal relationships, online research and effective written communications. Working with key contacts within A.T. maintaining clubs, National Park Service and the US Forest Service, the goal of the position is to promote volunteer opportunities and increase participation from new volunteers. The selected candidate must be able to work both independently with minimal supervision and cooperatively as a team.

 

Through this position, recreation visitors, A.T. Community members and the general public will gain a greater understanding of the essential service volunteers provide to the A.T. with an aim to cultivate their active participation. This work underpins the Partnership of the National Trails System’s (PNTS) third goal of building capacity of organizations to better administer, manage and sustain national scenic, historic and recreation trails. It also bolsters ATC’s strategic plan goal of Engaged Partners by assisting all 31 clubs in meeting their commitments to manage the Trail and its facilities into the future. 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Research online and over the phone/email with club volunteer leaders upcoming A.T. volunteer events.
  • Research upcoming volunteer and training opportunities with ATC program staff.
  • Serve as a technical advisor for listings to appeal to volunteers of all ages and craft messages for social media in addition to website listings.
  • Author a volunteer opportunity promotion strategy to present at the Volunteer Leadership Meeting in August.
  • Track volunteer interest for events posted through ATC’s website.
  • Assist volunteer program staff in exploring ideas for volunteer recruitment strategy.
  • Draft volunteer event press releases
  • Facilitate volunteer capacity building through promotion of opportunities on regional volunteer hubs.
  • Connect personally with individuals, groups, scouts with volunteer interest to ensure they are appropriately engaged.
  • Follow-up with event hosts after activities to collect participation information and collect lessons learned to be shared.
  • Process work-trip rosters, accomplishments, and file photos.
  • Track data on volunteer participation and efficacy of outreach methods.
  • Participate in a minimum of two volunteer activities to capture and tell stories of National Scenic Trails and volunteerism through pictures, videos and articles.
  • As time allows, interface with new volunteers by participating on work trips.
  • As time allows, capture best practices of trail skills and successful models for volunteer engagement for The Register Blog.
Qualifications:
  • Excellent persuasive writing skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong competence with word processing and spreadsheets and database skills
  • Experience with media relations and public relations
  • Experience writing for social media and familiarity with social networking sites
  • Familiarity with the Appalachian Trail and experience with trail work is desirable
  • Ability to problem-solve
  • High degree of initiative and a team player
  • Desire to learn and contribute
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to communicate with individuals by phone, email and in person.
  • Working on the phone or computer for prolonged periods.
  • Visits to high-profile volunteer project sites may entail hiking, but is not required.

Time and Location

The position requires a minimum of 10 hours per week with a not-to-exceed of 17 hours per week at the Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s office in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia where there is moderate noise level due to an office environment with a high level of activity of staff and volunteers on the phone, computers and using printers. (Other ATC regional office locations in New England may be considered. Remote work location considered.)

Schedule will be scheduled in advance and defined by intern and his/her counterpart as well as the intern supervisor

Compensation
Intern will receive a monthly stipend of $555.

Important Note
This position is generously funded by the Partnership for the National Trails System’s Trail Intern Grant program. Due to the grant funding requirements, interns must be between 16 and 29 years old.
