March 2013 - Vince Mier

by Susan Daniels | Mar 05, 2013

After moving to Virginia in 2007, Vince Mier and his wife Lori took a dayhike to Dragon's Tooth and became hooked on the A.T. He became involved with the Roanoke A.T. Club to learn more about the Trail, to help preserve and maintain it, and to start training for a thru-hike.

When a trail maintenance section became available, Vince jumped at the opportunity. As he painted a blaze at an overlook one day, he realized that, while it was something most would barely notice, it had special meaning to him. “The last blaze I painted that day was on the backpack I thru-hiked with," says Vince. Naturally, his Trail name is "Blaze."

Vince's photographs show his love for the A.T. He has donated many of them to ATC—some are displayed at ATC headquarters—and they have appeared on ATC's website and in Appalachian Trail Journeys. He's also volunteered for ATC's membership drives and at Trail festivals. Javier Folgar, ATC marketing and communications director, says, "Vince has done a tremendous job to spread the word about the A.T. and the ATC."

As Vince puts it, "The Trail has had an incredibly positive impact on my life, so any time I can share that with others in the hope that they too can experience it, I am happy to do so."  As a relatively new A.T. maintainer, he also says, "I am honored just to have the opportunity to help to preserve and manage the Appalachian Trail. I am motivated, humbled, and inspired by my fellow RATC members; especially Homer and Therese Witcher, David Jones, and Dick Clark."

Great to see something like this awarded to Vince! He's an avid outdoorsmen and he shows it. He has such a passion for being out there. I was one of his coworkers when he was out at Gander Mountain and as his thru-hike approached I could see the excitement build in him and it made me more intrigued to learn about the AT, he's also one of the reasons I want to do more hiking. Keep up the good work buddy and maybe we can hit some trails together after I get out of college!

I am so happy the ATC is recognizing Vince!  He is so deserving!  We are very fortunate to have him in Roanoke.  He is always willing to share his knowledge and enthusiasm for the AT and his love for hiking.  Vince is a very giving person.  He is a wonderful trail maintainer and overseer.  He has shared his thru-hiking experience with a beautiful slide presentation to our local RATC (as well as with other groups in the community).  I first met him during a Backpacking 101 class he taught which was full of invaluable information.  With his thru-hiking experience, he is a fountain of knowledge yet he is humble and a kind soul!  Yeah Vince!

Vince is an inspiration to everyone.  I admire how he has channeled his passion for outdoor recreation into his work at Walkabout Outfitters.  I know that I can always count on him to give me the best gear recommendations and make sure I am best prepared to hit the trail.  Congratulations to a great person!

I met Vince when he was still at Gander Mtn.. Not knowing he was a thru-hiker and he not knowing that I was even thiking that I was a hiker he was very kind and more than happy to answer any of my dumb questions. When I left I felt like I had just talked to a friend.  Well deserved award Vince.  Thanks for all your help.   Phil

Way to go Vince! Not only does Vince volunteer on and off the trail, he is a great trail host. Because of AT pictures from Vince, I have become interested in hiking it. Vince shared lots of tips and great sites for our first visit. So Vince doesn't just spend hours working for the trail he also promotes it. Great job Vince.
