Fitzhugh Lee Penn, Jr. (“High Pocket”) passed away on Saturday, December 4, 2010. High Pocket completed the Appalachian Trail in 1989 and continued to volunteer in and around the Appalachian Trail community for approximately the next 15 years, including a couple of stints at ATC Headquarters in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. He spent every summer at Tilly Woods’ Woodshole cabin, a hiker hostel in Pearisburg, VA, helping to provide meals and support for thru-hikers, bandage blisters, give hiking and trail advice, and generally help anyone who needed it. His adventures and wisdom were featured in the Thru Hikers’ Handbook several times as well as several local A.T. newspapers. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the River Oaks Presbyterian Church, 385 Washington Avenue, Lake Mary, Florida 32746, where he was a member, or to Appalachian Trail Conservancy, PO Box 807, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425.

Hugh was a true gentleman who always looked for ways to help people and make them smile. I will miss him dearly.
