Mapping & GIS Data: Data Download Agreement

Please review this agreement before downloading Appalachian Trail GIS and GPS data.

The Appalachian Trail GIS and GPS data, developed cooperatively by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) and National Park Service Appalachian Trail Park Office (ATPO), represents the most current digital depiction of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail centerline and its associated trail features. Locational information used to create these data sets were obtained from global positioning systems (GPS) survey data collected between 2002 and 2009. All data are in latitude/longitude (decimal-degrees) format, using either the North American Datum 1927 or World Geodetic System 1984 (see metatdata for details), and all units are in feet.

These data sets were developed to provide a digital depiction of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail centerline and several of its trail features in an usable and easily transferable format to assist the A.T. staff, agency partners, and trail-maintaining clubs with land-management duties; to aid local planning agencies, telecommunications companies, and other groups with planning activities, such as siting telecommunication towers or other new developments that could have a substantial impact on the Appalachian Trail; and for scientific and educational use by universities and other groups. The GPS data set was developed to provide a general depiction of selected Trail features along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail in a format that may be uploaded to common consumer-grade handheld GPS units for recreational and entertainment purposes. These data are not considered an official source of information for navigation.

To access and use this data, we ask that you agree to the following liability disclaimer and that you use proper citation (see metadata for details) on any materials (digital or printed) in which this information appears, and that you use the data appropriately.

It is strongly recommended that these data be directly acquired from ATC or NPS servers and not indirectly through other sources that may have changed the data in some way. Although these data have been processed successfully on several different Global Positioning Systems (GPS) units and on computer systems at both the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and National Park Service, no warranty expressed or implied is made regarding the utility of the data on other systems for general or scientific purposes nor shall the act of distribution to the public or other agencies constitute any such warranty. This disclaimer applies both to individual use of the data and aggregate use with other data.
